On Feb.5th(Sat), a Japanese Language Speech Contest for middle and high school students in Dallas district was held at Ted Polk Middle School in Carollton. There were 65 competitors who were divided into 3 categories ( according to proficiency) of poetries and a free speech.

Gregory Golden who is a senior student of his high school and has studied Japanese language at our school since four years ago participated in the free speech category and received the second prize. He calmly and beautifully narrated his first experience visiting our Sister City, Nagaoka, during the past summer. In his limited 3 minutes, he was able to convey at closing about his concern for the severe earth quake which had hit the City. The speech was highly regarded for its contents.

Gregory started his preparation two month ago. To contain his speech in the time requirement, he had to chisel off the contents and rewrite many times. After the speech draft, he carried his taped speech everywhere to memorize. During the last two weeks prior to the competition, he repeatedly studied the correct pronunciation and elocution with his teachers.

With such great efforts, Gregory competed favorably with students who had studied the Japanese language 2 to 3 years everyday at school. Congratulations!

当アドバンスクラスのグレゴリー君　日本語スピーチコンテストにて堂々２位

去る２月５日（土）、ダラス地区の中高校生のための日本語スピーチコンテストがキャロルトンのテッドポーク中学校にて開催されました。当日は１２の中高校からの参加者６５名が、習熟度別に分けられた３つの詩暗唱部門と、フリースピーチに挑みました。

当日本語スクールで、４年前より日本語を勉強している高校シニアグレードのグレゴリー君が、これに参加し、フリースピーチ部門で、堂々２位を受賞しました。グレゴリー君は、フォートワースの姉妹都市、新潟県長岡市に昨夏初めて行った体験を、落ち着いた見事な表現力で語りました。また、３分間と言う限られた時間の中、長岡で地震があったことを案じる思いも最後に伝え、内容も高く評価されました。

彼は、およそ２ヶ月前よりスピーチコンテストの準備を始めました。文章作りでは、規定の時間に収めるために内容を削るなどの校正を繰り返し、完全に暗記するために、スピーチのテープを持ち歩いて練習し、最後の２週間は連日、クラスの先生たちと、正確な発音や表現力の練習を重ねました。

２年３年と毎日高校で日本語を学ぶ他の参加者の中で、これだけの好成績を納めたグレゴリー君、その努力の賜物ですね。　本当におめでとうございます。
